A Descriptive Study to Assess the Level of Knowledge regarding the Excessive use of Social Networking and its Effect on Students of Selected Colleges of Mehsana

ABSTRACT:

Background: Social networking has become the most important part of teenage students. Now a days everything is done due to internet facility and due to that social networking has been used more frequently in everyone’s life. We stretch to meet the environment around us, the demand of life style and the pressure that we out on ourselves. Aims and Objective To assess the level of knowledge regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students. To determine the association between the knowledge score with their demographic variables. Methods: The data were collected from 100 college students were selected using non-probability purposive sampling techniques in selected colleges of Mehsana. Multiple choice questions was used to assess the knowledge and its effect on college students regarding excessive use of social networking. Results: The findings of the study revealed that Majority (60%) of students had good level of knowledge and 24% students had excellent level of knowledge and 15% of students had average level of knowledge regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students. Conclusion: Majority of adults had good level of knowledge regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students.

INTRODUCTION:

The 21st century continues to user technological advances that change of communication, socialization, and private versus public information. One such change is the prominence that social networking sites currently enjoy, especially among the younger generations.1 Youth is the part of life that succeeds from childhood, the period of existence preceding maturity or age; the whole early part of life, from childhood to manhood. The youth is a condition or quality of being young. An early period of development or existence: a nation in its youth. It is the time of life between childhood and maturity.2

 

 

Social network sites are defined as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site.2

 

Social networking is a phenomenon which has existed since society began. Human beings have always sought to live in social environments. The proliferation of social networking sites (SNS) and their pervasion in everyday practices is affecting how Western societies manage their social networks. To a significant extent, SNS have shifted social networking to the Internet. In less than five years, these sites have grown from a niche online activity into a phenomenon through which tens of millions of internet users are connected, both in their leisure time, and at work.3

 

The Face book is a social network catered to college and high school communities. Among online social networks, Face book stands out for two reasons: its success, both in terms of membership and quality of information available on it; and the fact that, unlike other networks catered to young users, the information is uniquely and personally identified. Accordingly, FB is of interest to researchers in two respects: 1) as a 9-million and counting users phenomenon in itself - the behavior of its users, the gains as well as the risks they face; 2) as a quite unique experiment in information revelation, a source of highly valuable information about privacy attitude and privacy behavior among young individuals.4

Parents are becoming aware of many disadvantages of social networking sites including their affect on a child's ability to concentrate. Constant online communication affects children, making it difficult for them to communicate and concentrate when they are away from the screen. It is, therefore, important for parents to monitor their children's online social interactions and place a time limit on how long they can spend on the computer.4

 

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Teens that use Face book more often show more narcissistic tendencies while youths who have a strong Face book presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania and aggressive tendencies. Daily over use of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, preteens and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders, as well as by making them more susceptible to future health problems.6

 

 

More importantly, it is usually considered as a window of opportunity for the alienated. On the other hand, anonymity in the cyber space makes people insensible to abuse on the Internet. It brings about all sort of antisocial actions, infringement of intellectual property right, and leakage of private information. In spite of the two-edged effect, it is clear that we can not do without the Internet.5

Face book can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Face book at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades.7

 

Excessive Internet use is emerging as one of the more negative aspects of young people's online activities. For youth, the negative aspects of the Internet include Internet addiction as well as online risks such as exposure to sexually explicit material and online victimization including harassment or cyber bullying and sexual solicitation.8

 

Broad claims of victimization risk, at least defined as unwanted sexual solicitation or harassment, associated with social networking sites do not seem justified. Prevention efforts may have a greater impact if they focus on the psychosocial problems of youth instead of a specific Internet application, including funding for online youth outreach programs, school antibullying programs, and online mental health services.9

 

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

A non experimental descriptive research design was used to assess the knowledge regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students of selected college of mehsana”. The data were collected from 100 adult. “Non-probability purposive” sampling technique was used. A structured questionnaire (closed ended) was selected to assess the knowledge regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students.

 

RESULT:

Highest percentages 36% of students belongs to the age group of 19 to 20 years. Majority 36% students belongs to semester 5-6, Majority 42% of students use social networking from 3 years, Majority 35 of students uses whatsapp. Highest percentage 38% of students used social networking at sleep time.

 

The findings of the study revealed that Majority (60%) of students had good level of knowledge and 24% students had excellent level of knowledge and 15% of students had average level of regarding use of social networking and its effect on the students. There was significant association found between knowledge scores with demographic variables like Age, Long use of social networking, Site used more, Time when social networking is used more and other no association was found with other variables. It was assessed at 0.05% level of significance.

 

CONCLUSION:

The major conclusion drawn from this study was that highest percentage 60% students had good adequate knowledge regarding dengue fever.
