However, a nurse with adequate knowledge about signs of labor and skill in childbirth process can impart a feeling of confidence and a sense of emotional well-being. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of labour protocol on knowledge and practice among nurses at selected hospitals. Method: In this quasi experimental study, 60 staff nurses were recruited using Purposive sampling technique asper the inclusion criteria. The experimental and control group had 30 staff nurses respectively. The experimental group received the intervention which consisted of a Lecture cum discussion, demonstration and a booklet on labour protocol. The control group followed the hospital routines. The knowledge was assessed using structured knowledge questionnaire and an observation Checklist was used to assess practice of staff nurses. Findings: The overall posttest knowledge scores in experimental group reveals that, 93.3% nurses had adequate level of knowledge and 6.7% had moderately adequate level of knowledge. In the control group 63.3% had moderately adequate level of knowledge, 36.7% had adequate level of knowledge regarding labour protocol. The overall posttest practice scores in experimental group reveals that, 86.67% had good practice 13.33% had average level of practice. In the control group 63.33% had good practice and 36.67% had average level of practice regarding labor protocol. Conclusion: If quality nursing care is rendered during labour it not only enhances safe delivery but also prevent the complications that may endanger the life of the mother.
