ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Autism is a severe developmental disorder that begins within the first two and-a-half years of life. Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviours which are markedly different from those of typical children. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding autism among parents of autistic children in selected autistic school at Mysore. Approach and design: In the study, Pre Experimental Design- One Group Pre Test Post Test Design. Samples and sampling criteria: The knowledge was assessed among 40 Parents of Autistic Children Selected By Using Purposive Sampling Technique. The level of knowledge was measured by using Pre Test- Structured knowledge questionnaire Intervention- Structured teaching programme Post Test – Structured knowledge questionnaire regarding autism. The data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The findings of the study revealed that the mean post test knowledge scores 19.25 with standard deviation 1.95% was higher than the mean percentage pre test knowledge scores 10.82 with standard deviation 2.04%. The paired” t” test value was22.88 which is statistically found to be significant at 0.05 level. Conclusion: Thus study concludes that the autistic parents should get enough knowledge regarding autism. As health professionals it’s the responsibility of us to conduct some teaching program to improve their level of knowledge.
