ABSTRACT:
Background: Lead is a toxic heavy poisonous heavy metal, and widely distributed in the environment as well as in biological systems. The chronic exposure to lead causes various ill effects, and children are more vulnerable than others. It’s a major public health issue and people have limited awareness on lead poisoning and its ill effects on health. Information is very essential in preventing the disease as well as safeguarding children from exposure. Awareness generation and prevention is acknowledged as a best public health option, thus present study was carried out to determine the impact of education intervention on awareness regarding lead poison among parents. Material and Methods: It’s an experimental study where pre test and post test design was used. A total of 50 parents of Loni (Bk) village of Ahmednagar Dist, Maharashtra and aged above 21 years had participated; parents who has child undergoing treatment for lead poison was excluded from study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select study subjects. The Chicago Lead Knowledge Test questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. After the pre test, education intervention was carried out for four sessions 45 min each via lecture cum discussion, and supplemented information leaflets for further reinforcement. After 30 days of intervention post test was carried out. The data was analyzed with help of descriptive and inferential statistics wherever required. Results: The findings of study shows that overall pre test score was (12.1±2.96) indicate parents had ‘average’ level awareness on lead poison whereas in post test the participants had higher mean score (20.4±2.61) indicate ‘good’ which is statistically significant at P<0.05 level. A significant association was found between awareness and socio demographic characteristics like age and education of parents at P<0.05 level. Conclusion: Study outcome revealed that educative intervention was effective in improving awareness of parents on lead poison. Awareness imparts the health seeking behaviors, and controls overwhelmed risk of lead exposure and other ill effects. Thus it is recommended that the health education efforts should be given priority to create awareness on lead poison among general public.
