ABSTRACT:
Background: Hypertension is a prevalent chronic condition and a major contributor to cardiovascular morbidity. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as relaxation techniques, may complement routine management in reducing blood pressure. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of Shavasana on blood pressure among hypertensive clients in selected hospitals. Methods: A quantitative evaluative research approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design was used. Sixty hypertensive clients were selected through convenience sampling, with 30 participants assigned to the experimental group and 30 to the control group. Demographic data were collected, and blood pressure was measured according to Joint National Committee VIII classification. Following pre-test assessment, the experimental group practiced Shavasana under investigator supervision for three consecutive days, after which post-test blood pressure measurements were recorded for both groups. Data were analysed using paired t-test and chi-square tests. Results: In the experimental group, pre-test systolic blood pressure showed 50% of participants in Stage I hypertension and 50% in Stage II, whereas post-test readings indicated 50% in Stage I, 33.33% in pre-hypertension, and 16.67% in Stage II. Pre-test diastolic blood pressure revealed 83.33% in Stage I and 16.67% in Stage II; post-test readings showed 53.33% in pre-hypertension, 36.67% in Stage I, and 10% in Stage II. The mean systolic blood pressure in the experimental group decreased from 156.47 ± 11.41 mmHg to 150.37 ± 11.88 mmHg (mean difference 6.10 mmHg), and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 94.0 ± 4.11 mmHg to 89.80 ± 4.74 mmHg (mean difference 4.20 mmHg). Paired t-tests confirmed statistically significant reductions in both systolic (t = 7.492) and diastolic (t = 5.105) blood pressure in the experimental group. The control group showed no significant changes. Chi-square analysis revealed significant associations between certain demographic variables and blood pressure outcomes. Conclusion: Shavasana is an effective, safe, and cost-efficient non-pharmacological intervention for reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure among hypertensive clients. Incorporating Shavasana into routine nursing practice may enhance holistic hypertension management and improve patient outcomes.
