ABSTRACT:
Background:Tobacco smoke is one of the documented harmful agents that people voluntarily get exposed to. Nurses are primarily involved in delivering preventive strategies to curb the use of tobacco. The current study explores the nurses role by assessing the knowledge and attitude towards prevention of tobacco use among nurses working in Psychiatric department. The psychological effects of tobacco uses causes deleterious health hazards in patients. Nurses have a paramount role in preventing tobacco use among patients. Therefore the knowledge and attitude of nurses plays a vital role in delivering effective health education. Materials and Methods:A descriptive survey was undertaken on a sample of 45 nurses working in psychiatric department of AIIMS ,New Delhi. The subjects were assessed using self-developed knowledge questionnaire and 5-point likert attitude scale. Reliability and validity of the tool were established. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results:Mean knowledge score of psychiatric nurses towards prevention of tobacco use was 19.04±2.938 with more than half (58%) had moderate knowledge. The mean attitude score of psychiatric nurses towards prevention of tobacco use was 57.13±7.83 with majority (73%) had positive attitude.There was statistically significant association between education and attitude towards prevention of tobacco use at p<0.05 among the nurses working in psychiatric department. There was a statistically significant association was seen among the nurses who had not attended in-service education and attitude towards prevention of tobacco use at p<0.05 in nurses working in psychiatric department .Conclusion:Nurses had moderate knowledge and positive attitude towards prevention of tobacco use. It would promote quality patient care in providing tobacco cessation interventions and reduces morbidity and mortality related to smoking and smoking related diseases.
