ABSTRACT:
Burn injuries constitute a major health problem and are next only to road traffic accidents as the leading cause of death in children in India. The boys stand third in rank and girls second as the cause of accidental death in children between the ages of 1 and 4 years. These burns can be caused by fire and flames, contact with hot liquids, hot surfaces or corrosive house hold products, faulty or incorrectly used electricity and prolonged exposure to the sun. Hot water scalds are most frequent in toddlers, flame related burns are more common in older children, 10% to 20% of documented cases of child abuse include burn injuries and Children playing with matches or lighters account for 1 in 10 house fires. Objectives: To identify the behavioural response of the children in the control group while undergoing wound dressing. To find out the effect of play in improving the behavioural response of children while undergoing wound dressing. To compare the difference in behaviour among children in experimental and control group. To determine the association of the behavioural response among children of experimental group in relation to their background variables. Methods: Quasi experimental study with post test only control group design was used. Total 40, 20 in experimental and 20 in control. Children in experimental group were given the play therapy and observed for the behavioural response during burn dressing where as the control group were observed without play therapy during burn dressing. Results: The findings of the study showed, 16(80%) poorly cooperated during the procedure and 4(20%) moderately cooperated during the wound dressing without play therapy. Majority of the children in the experimental group 15 (75%) cooperated well during the procedure and 5(25%) moderately cooperated during the wound dressing along with play therapy. Majority of the children in experimental group 15 (75%) cooperated
well during wound dressing and in control group 16 (80%) poorly cooperated during wound dressing. There was no significant association between behavioural response and background variables such as age, sex, birth order of the child, type of burns and degree of burns. The children who received play therapy in experimental group showed improved behavioural response than the children in control group. And thus play therapy improve the behavioural response of children undergoing wound dressing.
